|What causes dark circles under the eyes?
The occasional dark circles under the eyes can be caused by alcohol, smoking, lack of sleep, allergies, quick weight loss and dehydration. But persistent dark circles that never go away are usually caused by genetics (although the factors above can make them worse). Unfortunately, this only gets worse with age. As we get older, the skin under the eyes becomes thinner due to loss of collagen and fat and the purple blood vessels can more easily be seen through the skin.
What can you do to minimize dark circles?
A recently developed treatment, injections of Restylane, is generating quite a lot of buzz. Although injections into that part of the face are anything but pleasant, even with a numbing cream, the effects can be dramatic. Dermatologists all over the country are raving about the results, as are many of their patients. This hyaluronic acid filler fills the hollow skin under the eyes and makes the dark blood vessels much less visible. The added benefit of smoother skin and fewer lines is a big plus, too. The injections are not cheap and they last only 10-12 months, but that’s 10-12 months of brighter, fresher looking eyes.
If you’re taken aback by the idea of injections anywhere near your eyes, or are concerned about the cost, there are some products that can help.
