When
the weather gets cold and windy, it is common to experience extra dryness
and flakiness of the skin. Most of us instinctively reach for the moisturizer,
only to find that it doesn't seem to help much. Even heavier moisturizers
commonly come up short. But the problem may not be your moisturizer. Once
dry, flaky skin is present, applying a moisturizer may simply cover up
the underlying dryness.
If this scenario sounds familiar to you, here are a few things you should
consider:
- If
you are using an alpha-hydroxy, Retin-A or Vitamin-C product, decrease
the frequency of its application. And always apply a moisturizer over
them. By doing this you will decrease the chances of your skin becoming
too dry or irritated.
- Change
to a gentle lotion cleanser as oppose to a gel. Try Dr. Dennis
Gross Skincare All-in-One
Facial Cleanser with Toner.
- Use
a gentle scrub 2-3 times a week to manually exfoliate flaky skin. We recommend
Karin Herzog Mild Scrub or Ole Henriksen New
Beginning Scrub.
To achieve an even better result, follow with a mask to further
soften and soothe the skin. Our recommendations: Karin Herzog Mask or
Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Intense
Hydra Mask.
- Add
a nourishing and hydrating supplement to your daily regimen:
For combination to oily skin, try iS Clinical Hydra-Cool
Serum.
For normal to combination skin try Ole Henriksen Black
Currant Energizing Oil.
For dry skin, try Karin Herzog Vita-A-Kombi
Facial Oil.
These supplements can be used on as-needed basis, and in addition to
your existing moisturizer.
- Apply
sunscreen daily. Sun exposure, whether it occurs during the summer or
winter
months, dries out the skin and causes sun damage. Our favorite sunscreens
are Innovative Skincare SPF
25 Treatment Sunscreen and
Innovative Skincare SPF
20 Powder Sunscreen.
