The best approach to treating Acne

Acne is a multi-factorial disease, therefore its treatment needs to contain products that address all the main causes of acne. The products must normalize and increase exfoliation of the skin to prevent buildup of dead skin cells on the surface that can clog the pores. They must kill bacteria in the pore, reduce inflammation and control excessive oil production often associated with acne. The treatment of acne should also be customized based on factors such as age, severity of acne, and other skin conditions such as discoloration, dryness, fine lines and wrinkles, and rosacea. Results from clinical trials indicate that treatment programs that contain multiple active ingredients produce better results than those that contain only a single active ingredient. Itís also important to remember that setting realistic expectations and having a little patience are the key factors in acne therapy. Although in some cases improvement may be noticeable right away, typically, it may take 3 to 4 months to notice significant improvement, depending on the severity of the acne.

Here are some of the most common acne-fighting ingredients:

Salicylic acidSalicylic acid
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that causes cells to shed more rapidly to prevent pores from clogging and forming blackheads. Salicylic acid also helps kill bacteria and reduces excessive oil production. It is often found in cleansers and topical acne treatments. We recommend Agera Salicylic Wash 2% and DDF Acne Control Treatment.
Benzoyl peroxideBenzoyl peroxide
The main function of benzoyl peroxide is to kill bacteria that cause acne. It also helps decrease oiliness. However, benzoyl peroxide is known to irritate skin and often cause redness and itching. For those whose skin can tolerate this highly effective active ingredient we recommend DermaQuest Skin Therapy Purity Cleanser 2.5% and DDF Benzoyl Peroxide Gel 5%.
Glycolic acidGlycolic acid
This alpha hydroxy acid helps reduce the buildup of dead skin on the surface often associated with acne by exfoliating it and reducing clogged pores. It also helps correct abnormal oil production in acne prone individuals. We recommend iS Clinical Active Serum and Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Peel Pads.
Azelaic acidAzelaic acid
Azelaic acid helps kill bacteria that cause acne, reduce the buildup of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, treat discoloration and reduce inflammation associated with acne. We recommend DermaQuest Skin Therapy DermaClear Tx or DermaQuest Skin Therapy DermaClear.
Sulfur has been used for over a thousand years to treat skin conditions. It helps eliminate active acne lesions by killing bacteria and prevents new lesions from forming. For those allergic to sulfa drugs who worry about using products that contain natural sulfur, these are two different compounds and sulfur is not a known allergenic agent, while sulfa drugs are. We recommend Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Trifix Acne Clearing Lotion and DDF Sulfur Therapeutic Mask.
Vitamin AVitamin A
Vitamin A may be present in a product in the form of retinoic acid, which is the most potent form and requires a prescription, as well as the over-the-counter retinol, retinyl palmitate and other derivatives of Vitamin A. Similarly to glycolic acid, Vitamin A helps exfoliate the skin and correct buildup of dead skin cells on the surface that clogs pores and contributes to the development of p. acnes bacteria that cause acne. We recommend iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+.

To achieve the best results, the treatment program should contain at least two to three of these active ingredients.
