| Do you ever wonder why Sleeping
Beauty didnt age a bit after all those years of sleep? Well, according
to many researchers, the best way to stay young may be to get some rest. Theyve
found that the physiological effects of sleep deprivation are similar to those
of aging!
During one of the studies, the
subjects were limited to only 4 hours of sleep for 6 consecutive nights. Their
heart rate, glucose levels, and levels of cortisol (a hormone secreted during
the time of stress) were monitored throughout this study. The researchers found
the subjects to be generally more irritable in temperment and also observed
increases in levels of glucose and cortisol levels at night. These changes are
characteristic of aging and can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes.
The levels of glucose and cortisol returned to normal when the subjects were
allowed to catch up on their sleep. The study concluded that getting 8 hours
of sleep every night may help slow the aging process. It also helps you stay
more alert and calm, and help you cope with stress.
