BEAUTY BUZZ:
The latest in skincare technology

Everyone is talking about Microdermabrasion, the latest skin exfoliating procedure. You may have come across it under the name Power Peel, Derma Peel, Crystal Peel, or Parisian Peel. All these names refer to microdermabrasion, a non-surgical, mildly abrasive technique designed to remove dead layers of skin.

Unlike chemical peels, which utilize acids, microdermabrasion is a mechanical process of skin exfoliation. Aluminum oxide micro crystals in a closed vacuum system are directed onto the skin to remove the superficial layers. The procedure takes between 20-30 minutes and requires no anesthesia. Depending on the area treated, an immediate improvement in the skin's appearance should be noted after the first treatment. Microdermabrasion is recommended for acne scarring, sun damage, stretch marks and fine lines. For maximum results, 8-12 treatments may be required at an average cost of $120-$150 per session. Some clinics offer packages, which lower the cost of individual treatments.

After extensive research into different companies selling this equipment, the founder of Skinterra decided to give the Power Peel a try. Below, is her experience with this procedure.

"The procedure was performed by an aesthetician working in a medical office. Being my first microdermabrasion procedure, I decided that a light treatment would be the most appropriate. Deeper treatments administered by physicians utilizing a separate piece of equipment and requiring a topical anesthetic are also available. The procedure took about 30 minutes. To my surprise the experience, unlike that of certain acid peels I've had done in the past, was not uncomfortable. Immediately afterwards my skin felt warm and looked flushed for the remainder of the day (it was performed in the late afternoon). My face was covered with tiny, slightly abrasive crystals that would have made the application of makeup rather difficult, so I chose to forego it. The crystals were easily removed, however, by cleansing the face with a mild facial cleanser. Only then was I truly able to feel the results of the treatment. My skin felt incredibly soft and smooth I couldn't stop touching it. It simply glowed; and it continued to glow for several days afterward. At no point did it flake or peel, as often the case with acid peels."

Most likely, microdermabrasion would not make a significant improvement on acne scarring or fine wrinkles. However, this is a great procedure if you are looking to rejuvenate and refresh your complexion with no downtime.
