Microdermabrasion
Everyone is talking about Microdermabrasion, the
latest skin exfoliating procedure. You may have come across
it under the name Power Peel, Derma Peel,
Crystal Peel, or Parisian Peel. All these
names refer to microdermabrasion, a non-surgical, mildly
abrasive technique designed to remove dead layers of skin.
Unlike chemical peels, which
utilize acids, microdermabrasion is a mechanical
process of skin exfoliation. Aluminum oxide micro crystals
in a closed vacuum system are directed onto the skin to
remove the superficial layers. The procedure takes between
20-30 minutes and requires no anesthesia. The results are
fairly similar to those of superficial chemical peels, although
microdermabrasion may not cause the kind of excessive dryness
or flakiness that may be experienced after an acid peel.
It is also safe to undergo this procedure during pregnancy
or when lactating. Depending on the area treated, an immediate
improvement in the skin's appearance should be noted after
the first treatment.
Microdermabrasion is recommended for acne scarring, sun damage, stretch
marks and fine lines. For maximum results, 8-12 treatments
may be required at an average cost of $120-$150 per session.
Some clinics offer packages, which lower the cost of individual
treatments.
There are several products
that can enhance the results of microdermabrasion and in
some cases, substitute for it completely. Our favorites
