| Aestheticians
Aestheticians are trained
skin care specialists working in day spas, salons and, increasingly,
in the offices of dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Aestheticians
working under physicians are commonly referred to as paramedical
aestheticians. Generally, they have more extensive training
and education than those employed in spas and salons. They
are also able to perform stronger exfoliating treatments,
usually referred to as peels, under the supervision of a
physician. Peels utilize a variety of acids ranging in strength
and depth of penetration. While facials are more relaxing
in nature, affecting the skin only superficially, peels
are generally more effective at addressing specific skin
conditions such as acne, pigmentation irregularities, sun
damage and overproduction of oil. They also help improve
the texture of the skin and smooth out fine lines.
To find an aesthetician in
your area, look in the yellow pages or call the nearest
dermatologist 's or plastic surgeon's office. Don't hesitate
to ask about experience, especially when considering acid
peels. Also consider a consultation, which is typically
complimentary, prior to undergoing a treatment. This will
allow the aesthetician to analyze your skin based on the
information you submit, provide you with options, and help
you choose the best treatment.
